How Do You "tighten Your Abs" During Exercise Without Stopping Breathing?

Sounds like a really stupid question but it has me stumped

Every time I go to a bodypump class the instructor is continually shouting out "tighten your abs" or "keep your abs tight". Yet everytime I try to do the exercise with my abs tight I can't breath (obviously I can breath) but I tend to hold my breath instead.

What am I doing wrong and how do you tighten your abs without holding your breath instead

Plus – what is the point of tightening your abs anyway. Especially if the exercise are for my arms or legs?

Suggestion:

If you breathe out with force, you can feel your abdominal muscles working. These are the muscles you're trying to tighten. If you tighten your abdominal muscles, you're giving greater core muscle support to your arms and legs, as well as forcing blood to your extremities.
