Make a Plan
Take the time to plan out what you want to eat, at least in general, throughout the next week. You might opt to use the circular from your favorite healthy food store. This will let you change your menu from week to week, and still stay on a budget.
Figure out how much of which items you will need to prepare a majority of your high stress meals. If dinner is the one that drives you nuts, make a pot of soup or chili that can sit in the freezer until the right day. If it is breakfast that you never seem to have time to prepare, make a large pot of steel cut oats and eat them for three mornings running, or make some breakfast burritos to take on the road.
Use your Weekend
It really doesn’t matter if your weekend comes on Saturday and Sunday or Tuesdays, plan ahead to use the time wisely. With a little organization, you can prepare a selection of staples you can use for several days in a matter of a couple of hours. Not only will this give you healthy options you can grab quickly, it will save you a lot of money as you won’t need to consider eating out when you are tired and short on time later in the week.
Wash and cut up all the veggies that you think you will want for the next two to three days. Crisp veggies like carrots, celery, broccoli and cauliflower will last for even longer. Salad greens can be washed and wrapped in a paper towel before bagging.
Cook up chicken breasts, hard boiled eggs, any fish you are willing to eat cold and even some things like frittatas, crustless quiches and breakfast burritos made on spelt tortillas all freeze well or hold in the fridge for a few days.
Preparation Reduces Cravings
One of the best benefits of planning your meals in advance, or at least anticipating some of them, is that you don’t end up staring at the fridge when hungry, fighting off temptation. Especially at the beginning of any new eating system, cravings are a real challenge. If you know what you have planned for dinner tonight, you don’t have to think about it, just defrost it or throw it together.
Now, it is a given that from time to time you are going to be confronted with an unexpected situation and succumb to temptation. The next step is up to you. Accept that everyone has choices to make, and if you are truly committed to your weight loss meals, get right back to them the next day. After all, they are already waiting for you in your kitchen.
