Making Good Restaurant Nutrition Choices

When you think of good nutrition, eating out in a restaurant may not exactly be the first thing to come in mind. Eating out be bad for your diet or fitness program unless you make good restaurant nutrition choices. To do that, you need to educate yourself on what a good food choice is. It can be very easy to be tempted by all the choices when staring at a menu. Especially when the menu includes image of their specials, fattening cheeseburgers and nachos, tender juicy steaks and deserts, staying on your diet is nearly impossible. But, if you just what to look for and what choices to make, sticking to your diet can be done even while eating out at restaurants.

Nutrition Information

Many restaurants will provide you with a card or a piece of paper with the restaurant nutrition information on it, as long as you request it. This is a great way to discover for yourself which of the menu items are good for you. Fast food stalls, including your sit down restaurants will also provide you this information, as they know that many people are trying to watch their waistlines. Should you find yourself in a place where restaurant nutrition information isn’t available, you still should be able to make good nutrition choices by studying.

Good Vs. Bad Choices

When watching your weight, or just keeping healthy in general, it’s best to stay away from anything fried, cooked with too much oil, anything with a lot of condiments or sauces on it, and anything that includes too much cheese or butter. Not only are these types of foods very fattening, but they can be very high in cholesterol and are packed with a lot of calories in a single meal. In fact, many of these types of foods will provide you with all the calories you require for one full day. And that’s just a single meal.

Good restaurant nutrition choices include things such as salads (go easy on the dressing), grilled chicken sandwiches, stir fry items and anything that involves more natural ingredients. Restaurants will often times provide healthy selections such as these in a separate section on the menu so that you can make good choices. They might call the section the ‘Healthy Heart’ menu or something in similar context.

Restaurant nutrition is not good for you in general, but by educating yourself on what you should and should not eat, you’ll be able to stay right on track; regardless if you’re eating at your favorite sit down or fast food restaurant.
