Rowing for Fitness

If you’ve been searching for the ideal form of exercise then I can tell you now, that your search is over. While there are benefits to many forms of exercise, like running, swimming or cycling, there are also major drawbacks. Running tends to be high impact and can cause knee injuries, cycling requires expensive equipment and focuses 90% on the lower body, and swimming of course requires a pool (or a river!). So what is the ideal form of exercise? Well I’m glad you asked – in my opinion its rowing.

Rowing not only gives the whole body a great workout, but unlike some other activities such as running it is also very low impact. That means you’re unlikely to injure yoruself, either short term or long term, while rowing as it puts little strain on the body. Rowing is great as a cario workout, ideal if you want to lose weight, and works the upper and lower body as well as the core muscles. Rowing machines are also quite inexpensive, and all enough to pack away when not being used.

If your idea of a rowing machine is the bulky, noisy, two lever hydraulic unit your father used to use then think again. Modern rowers are small, sleek and quiet. They are also very effective, giving a great working in comfort.

There are different types of rower which you’ll encounter in the shops. The most expensive are the new water rowers. They are great and some of them look more like expensive furniture than exercise equipment. They are a case of form over function however, and they are no better that the other types and keeping you fit. Air rowers are very good but also quite noisy so are best used at the gym. That leaves my favorite and the type I recommend to all beginners – the magnetic rowing machines which are small, compact and inexpensive yet highly effective.

I’ve had a number of different rowers over the years, and I’ve always had a weights bench and exercise bike in my home gym. If I had to downscale however it would be the bench and the bike which had to go, as I would never give up my rower. They are just so versatile, and they take up next to no space, so are my number 1 top tip for the home gym.
